Latitude vs. Wind Speed

In this chart, we see higher wind speeds as we move further north, likely a result of fewer tall buildings, trees, and mountains that otherwise cause friction. During winter months especially, there is a wide temperature disparity between the equator and the poles. Because changes in air temperature also affect atmospheric pressure, wind speeds are higher as they flow from high atmospheric pressures to low pressures.
